Call for Papers: Two Session on Climate Change Adaptation at AGU (USA)

Last modified August 27, 2010 08:00 expired

Please join us at the American Geophysical Union Meeting in San Francisco this December, and please provide an abstract on any and all work on climate change adaptation to one or other - or both of these sessions. Several members of this convener group have work together with Steve Schneider at AGU since 2007 on building these sessions. We are all very sad that Steve will not be with us - but his encouragement and inspiration continues in these sessions.

Colleagues - please join us at the American Geophysical Union Meeting in San Francisco this December, and please provide an abstract on any and all work on climate change adaptation to one or other - or both of these
sessions. Several members of this convener group have work together with Steve Schneider at AGU since 2007 on building these sessions. We are all very sad that Steve will not be with us - but his encouragement and inspiration continues in these sessions. Hope to see many of you at AGU.

*_Union Session: Climate Change Adaptation Science _*is in its infancy.
The USA (Barron 2009; SCIENCE 326:643) and Canada (Lemmen et al 2008: NACC) have little climate change adaptive capacity. Adaptive capacity is more limited than the Developing World. Millions near coasts and on islands will lose their homes to rising seas; the poor will face reduced food production and increased hunger, malnutrition, and disease. Extreme events will become more frequent, making it even harder for developing
countries to attain the UN Millennium Development Goals of 2015. For a safe and sustainable future nations must "act now, act together, and act differently" (Bierbaum & Zoellick, 2009; SCIENCE 326: 771). This session addresses all aspects of building adaptation strategies and capacities. Invited abstracts include James Hansen (GISS), Richard Ally (Penn State), Ken Caldiera (Carnegie Institute) and Ben Santer (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory). *_Education Session: Climate Change Adaptation - Education and Communication -_* there is a substantial communication gap between the global climate science community, educators and society. This session seeks to define and improve ways and means to broaden and enhance climate change communication and education for classrooms, and for all sectors of society. Invited presentations will include Michael Mann (Penn State) and Cynthia Rosenzweig (GISS). The full session description is here:
