The next intake to this programme will be in August 2005: enquiries should be sent as soon as possible, and not later than 1 April 2005, by Email to magm@science.uz.ac.zw copy to chipindu@science.uz.ac.zw or by FAX to MAGM in Harare on 263 4 307156. A brief curriculum vitae should be sent, together with an indication of likely sources of funding, and an indication of areas of interest for a research project. This is the seventh intake to the programme, initiated in 1996.

Many heavily populated coasts, notably those of Chile, Peru, Japan and Hawai, in the Pacific Ocean have been swept again and again by great waves known as ‘Tsunami’ surging as high as 20 m above normal sea level. Most of them follow strong earthquakes, but violent volcanic explosions start some of them.

As I wrote already to several of you, on my way to Washington, for a WMO meeting, I came across a newspaper item in "The Asahi Shimbun", a leading national newspaper in Japan. It was attached as p. 21 of the International Herald Tribune of Saturday/Sunday, 31st May/1st of June 2003, on new measures emphasized by the Central Disaster Management Council, to prepare the Tokai region of Japan for a major earth quake.
