Announcement: Great Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data source
One of the primary repositories to find reliable historic SST data.
Several months ago I was stymied trying to find reliable historic SST data. One of the primary repositories is the UK MetOffice Hadley Center. Fortunately, great friend and programming whiz Scott Archer, IPS Meteostar http://wxweb.meteostar.com/ parsed the data into the following awesome resource:

Note the ability to view the data in either "calendar" mode, or as a long time-series.
