Dr. Derk Rijks (Ferney Voltaire, France), former Chief of the WMO Agrometeorology Division in Geneva (1981 – 1993), has been knighted by Her Majesty the queen of the Netherlands as “Ridder in de Orde van Oranje Nassau” for his work after his retirement in the refugee camps of Chad.

Dr. Rijks, who graduated from Wageningen University in the Netherlands in 1959 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Reading in 1969, is adviser and coordinator for emergency and development projects with the organization KoZon.

He successfully introduced in Darfur (western Sudan) and neighbouring Chad, the so called “Cookit”, cooking with solar energy, enabling girls and women to escape risking their lives to collect firewood outside the refugee camps. Also, solar cooking in semi-desert areas is a major factor in preserving the environment.

He also established an NGO, “TchadSolaire”, that has now to continue the work in the camps that he started.
