Abstract - The selection indices were developed for purebred Holstein Friesian cattle reared under tarai agroclimatic conditions of northern India. Using age at first calving (AFC), 305-day first lactation milk yield (305 FLMY), first lactation length (FLL), and peak yield in first lactation (FPY). The values for economic gain, heritability of the index (hi2) and accuracy of the index (rIH) ranged from Rs 6.92 (I2) to Rs 249.96 (I 8), 0.49 (I2) to 0.88 (I9) and 0.42 (I 2) to 0.94 (I6) respectively. The best indices for cattle in this region are I8 = - 2.86 (AFC) + 0.63 (305 FLMY) + 6.18 (FPY); I11= - 2.66 (AFC) + 0.69 (305 FLMY), - 0.45 (FLL), - 4.80 (FPY). Any of these could be used in herd.
